Reds raring to go for Jimmy Davis Memorial Cup

It’s been more than two months since FC United last took to the field against a Holker Old boys select XI and the players, just like many of the supporters, are raring to get back out there and start the pre-season campaign this Saturday with the trip down to Warwickshire to face Studley FC in the Jimmy Davis Memorial Cup. Craig Phillips provides this preview...

Summer is meant to be a time for relaxation, to take a break and to unwind, but for many of us finding something to fill those empty Saturday afternoons proves to be something akin to mild tourture. Well the good news is, the football season is nearly upon us which means the time has come for the pre-season friendlies and we start with perhaps the most fulfilling friendly of them all - the Jimmy Davis Memorial Cup.

For supporters who may be unaware, Jimmy was a talented young footballer with Manchester United who was tragically killed after a fatal road collision in August 2003. Jimmy was only 21 years old at the time of his death and when United won the FA Cup later that season the players lifted the trophy in shirts with Jimmy’s name and squad number, 36, on the back as a tribute.

The Jimmy Davis Memorial Fund was set up by Jimmy’s family and best friend Tim Wilkes in order to raise funds for young, up and coming footballers. Every year the memorial fund hosts a football math to raise money and awareness for the charity and this season FC United are honoured to have been invited by Jimmy’s family to take part.

Saturday’s opponents, Studley, were one of Jimmy’s local clubs, they were formed in 1971 and play in the Midland Football Alliance. The two sides will be hoping to put on an entertaining game for all the supporters and Margy will no doubt be keen to get his players straight back up to match fitness in plenty of time for the start of the season next month.

However, the fixture will form just part of the day as there will be a number of items on auction to raise money for the charity including signed shirts by David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Jonathan Greening.

Admission to the game is pay on the gate and the prices are £5 for adults, £3 for senior citizens and £2 for juniors.

Let’s hope it’s a great occasion for all and the beginning to another successful season.
