United left frustrated by resilient Woodley

United had to come from behind but in the end were left frustrated as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Woodley Sports.

Going into the game, the Reds’ opponents were five places above them in the league, but from the start United looked comfortable in possession.

The home side main threats came from good wing play from Jerome Wright and debutant Adam Carden, who both saw large amounts of the ball. Woodley looked just as good on the counter though and striker Mario Daniel looked a potential threat.

United had a goal disallowed early on for offside and they were made to count the full cost of that when a deep ball into their box found the head of Daniels, who headed back across Sam Ashton’s goal leaving an easy header into an open net for Nick Robinson.

United fought back well though and just before half time Rory Patterson made the most of a defensive error and smashed the ball passed Woodley keeper Liam Higginbotham to make the score 1-1 at half time.

Coming out for the second half you sensed if United were to get the edge they would need the full backing of the Manchester Road End which they were attacking. The crowd didn’t disappoint, getting behind the Reds as they enjoyed large amounts of possession.

Captain David Chadwick had to be substituted half way through the second half and United will be hoping his injury wasn’t that serious with big games coming up in the next two weeks.

The Reds enjoyed possession, but rarely created any clear-cut chances. The best opportunity came to Stuart Rudd who found a little bit of space on the edge of the box but saw his shot deflected wide for a corner.

United must have had at least six corners in the second period, but failed to capitalise. The game ended 1-1 but despite the stalemate United gave yet another solid performance. With United now unbeaten in four in the league, the campaign looks to be picking up momentum.
