These kids just keep getting younger...

On a pleasantly sunny Sunday afternoon FC United’s youth team returned to league activity after the excitement of reaching two cup finals. Daisy Hill provided the opposition and certainly didn’t surrender to the stroll in the park that studiers of form might have expected. That said FC United did get off to a flyer when in the fifth minute Toby Iloba chased on to a long ball which would otherwise have drifted out of play. His cross was met by the head of debutante Josh Burke and former Bury youngster who made it 1-0.

Further chances came and went for the next 10 minutes when Josh Burke headed home a Jamie Mack corner to double the lead. Daisy Hill who had been keenly contesting the game in all areas of the park throughout then had some chances of their own. Unfortunately for them FC scored again in the 24th minute when a Sam Freakes free kick was finished at close range by Nick Swirad who now surely can’t stop scoring.

Most people present thought this would be another high scoring contest but Daisy Hill continued to fight for everything and made FC work to keep the clean sheet. The back four of Reece, Swirad, Lee and Davies kept them to half chances, whilst Grant Shenton capably dealt with anything that got through to him. In particular with a fine save from a free kick on the edge of the box by Jake Foster.

With the game won, late in the second half debuts were given to three of the FC Colts who played against East Levenshulme last week,16 year old Lee Worswick and Laurence-Zisaruk-Gibson, along with 15 year old Jake Haslem all settled in well and look set to be the back bone of next seasons Under 18’s

In completely the reverse of the first team position the youth have five league games left but only one of these at St Bride’s against Prescot. A play-off between the top two teams of each group of the Premier Division looms on the horizon in early May, with a table topping position not yet out of the question with 5 wins.
