Last gasp Reds make it three in a row

FC United left it late to secure their third win in as many games as skipper David Chadwick prodded home an injury time winner at Ossett Town on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Reds came back from a goal down at half-time to win 2-1 with Ben Deegan cancelling out Andy Lee’s early opener before Chadwick sealed all three points in the dying seconds of the match.

United started the game slowly and were a goal down after seven minutes when a defensive mistake allowed the ever dangerous Ossett striker Andy Lee to run on goal and coolly lift the ball over Sam Ashton.

Things could have been worse for the away side but Ashton was quick to pull off a good save from a header from Hollindrake. In between these chances, Deegan was only inches from tapping in a Phil Marsh cross but in all honesty FC struggled to get their passing going in the blustery wind and it took till the 43rd minute before they had their next chance, which Adam Carden fired over, albeit from a tight angle.

Hollindrake, the Ossett no 10, was a constant menace to the FC United defence and he had another great chance to score just before half-time, but his shot was straight at the keeper.

During the break, the FC United players and staff came out of the dressing room early and this seemed to work as they started the second half in the ascendancy. The dangerous Deegan put a header straight at the keeper and put another one on the roof of the net as the Reds took control of the second 45.

It came as no surprise when Deegan headed FC level on 58 minutes from a superb cross from Carlos Roca. The home side weren’t happy as they felt that Deegan was offside, but the officials were unmoved. The game could have changed only two minutes later when an innocuous looking cross was fumbled onto his own post by Ashton.

The away team were having the majority of possession but the final ball seemed to be missing although Deegan did go close with a shot, as did Rob Nugent. At the other end, a mistake in the FC defence almost let Ossett take the lead, but to the relief of the travelling support, Ashton made the save.

Just when it looked like both teams would have to settle for a point each, United managed to win a corner on the left. The home keeper did well to tip the ball over the bar, as it looked like it would sneak under the crossbar.

From the resultant corner the ball was flicked into the box where Chadwick was waiting to fire the ball into the net for the winning goal.

All-in-all, it was a generally scrappy performance from United but the three points propelled the Reds to fifth in the league and was certainly a boost with the trip to top of the table Kendal Town looming large on Saturday.
