United held by Glossop North End

For the second time in this pre-season campaign the Reds were held to a goalless draw by North West Counties opposition, this time in the form of premier division side, Glossop North End.

Manager Karl Marginson again fielded a mixed side of youth and experience, giving an opportunity to members of the youth team and trialists. New signings Danny Browne and Martin Parker were also in the squad, lining up against their former side.

Despite early Glossop pressure, it wasn’t long before United came into the game, experiencing good spells of play down the right with Jamie Mack playing in the wide position. With less than a quarter of an hour gone, Mack picked out Ben Deegan in the box from a free-kick on the right and the centre forward rose for the header, putting it just off target.

In the latter stages of the half, the Reds looked to press the home side and industrious striker Gregor Manya struck from 25 yards out, testing North End’s goalkeeper Stuart Williams who managed to gather.

A minute later, Williams was called into action again as Cedric Krou hit from a similar distance, forcing the ’keeper into a flying save.

As half-time neared, both teams had opportunities to go ahead. David Chadwick’s goal-bound header across the six yard box was headed off the line and Glossop had their best chance of the half through Johnny Hussain whose effort from around 25 yards out rattled the crossbar.

United looked to go forward after the break and a good lay-off from Manya set up Krou to strike from the edge of the area, the keeper once again doing well to deny FC.

Jake Cotterell, who had an obvious impact on the game since coming on at half-time, showed strength winning the ball in the midfield and was able to carry it forward before unleashing a fantastic effort from outside the area and forcing Williams into another good save.

Youth team players Carl Fitton and Jake Haslam combined well on the left throughout the second half and between them provided good service into the middle where on one occasion Krou saw a powerful header beat the keeper only to narrowly fly wide of the target.

Despite good industry from both sides, neither were able to break the deadlock as United now go on in search of goals with the Supporters Direct Cup at stake against AFC Telford this Saturday.
