Reds aiming for three out of three at Retford

FC United are hoping to record their third straight victory of 2011 as they travel to Nottinghamshire on Saturday afternoon to take on Retford United and the Reds have been boosted by the news that Ben Deegan, Nicky Platt and Carlos Roca are now fully fit after overcoming bouts of flu.

After finishing sixth in last season’s Northern Premier Division, The Badgers lost all but one of their squad due to having to reduce the players’ wage budget and as a result they have had a torrid season this time around. Rooted to bottom spot they have failed to win at home all season, have picked up just two victories on their travels and were thrashed 7-0 last weekend at Buxton.

However, FC United manager Karl Marginson will definitely instruct his players not to read too much into our opponents’ current plight. United have already lost at lowly Mickleover Sports this season and last year they suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat to a young Durham side who were adrift at the bottom of the division.

Margy said: “We have to concentrate on doing what we do best – playing football. We’ve had two good wins so far in 2011 and although we didn’t play as well as we would have liked to against Bradford, the lads persevered and ground out a result. Sometimes that’s what you need in football. We’ll be looking to do better on Saturday but what we need is points on the board to get us back up the table, so we’ll take a few scrappy victories here and there if we have to.???

United almost have a clean bill of health although full-back Kyle Jacobs has a suspected hernia problem and may require an operation. Meanwhile, long-term absentee Steve Torpey is rehabilitating after recovering from his groin operation and is hoping to be match-fit before the end of the season. More information about both of these players will be given on the official website as soon as we have it.

Retford United versus FC United of Manchester is this Saturday at Cannon Park with a three o’clock kick-off. It’s pay on the gate, so get yourself to that football ground.
