Youth make it a 4-1 double

The FC United youth team returned to competitive action at St Bride’s after a six week absence. New Mills who had been out of action for even longer, were the visitors and went away on the wrong end of a 4-1 score line as the reds maintained a 100% league record.

The length of the break clearly showed in the first half an hour as both sides contested a keen but largely midfield battle. Indeed it wasn’t until the 25th minute that the first real chance was created. New Mills were attacking and as the ball headed across the area and hit the arm of Obied Elghreaw as he tried to control it. New Mills claimed, seemingly with good cause that it was in the FC penalty area, but the linesman who couldn’t have been closer signalled only for the offence and a free kick outside the box came to nothing. In the next attack FC won a corner and Obied was unlucky to head over and FC were denied a penalty of their own when Scott Cheetham appeared to be pushed over but the referee saw nothing wrong.

The final fifteen minutes of the first half were perhaps the highlight of the afternoon as FC from nowhere raced into a 3-0 lead. The first, on the half hour mark saw Ryan Lyons cross from the right to Dylan Moloney who was unmarked at the far post. His header was saved by Whitehead in the visitor’s goal only to provide Scott Cheetham with a simple tap in.

It was 2-0 after 38 minutes with easily the best move of the game as Ryan, Dylan and Lee Worswick were involved in an exchange of passes that provided a finish for Luke Kolakowski. The third came soon afterwards when somehow Obied was the furthest forward and able to shoot home unopposed.

If anyone was expecting that to be the precursor of a second half rout they would be disappointed as New Mills responded well to a half time team talk. Indeed for the first 20minutes of the second half looked the better side. The comeback started on the hour mark when a sweeping move saw New Mills outnumber the home defence to score.

Although this spurred FC back into action, there were few chances for either side until the last minute of the game. A Ryan Lyons long throw was missed by everyone in the box until Jake Haslam popped up at the far post to tap home.
