Welcome to the third edition of FCupdate, our regular weekly round-up of news and views from around the football world that should appeal to fans of a supporter-owned club like FC United.

It’s official: “Football is the worst governed sport in Britain???
Hardly a surprise to most people but when the government’s own sports minister talks in such frank terms about the running of the game then maybe all the talk about fans’ ownership is starting to find an echo? Read more in this interesting piece by the Daily Telegraph’s Henry Winter .
Liverpool FC unveils plans for supporters’ consultation committee
While it’s not fan ownership in any sense of the phrase, it’s interesting to see Liverpool Football Club unveiling plans for a new supporter consultation group that it hopes will allow fans to help shape the club’s future through regular and constructive dialogue with senior LFC officials. Supporters Direct chief executive Dave Boyle is on the selection panel that will nominate the supporters that will sit on the group. Read more at Liverpool Supporters Committee.
Supporters Direct’s Dave Boyle answers Guardian article on fans’ ownership
Last week’s FCupdate reported on a somewhat ill-informed article by the Guardian’s Louise Taylor which suggested that fans don’t want to run their own clubs. Taylor’s stance attracted much criticism on the Guardian’s website and the paper responded by carrying a response by Supporters Direct’s Dave Boyle. You can read it at The Guardian .
Footballer forgets he owned a Porsche
As an example of how out of touch, forgetful and downright stupid some professional footballers are, forgetting that you owned a performance car and then leaving it parked at a railway station for six months kind of takes the biscuit. More at

Sexism is alive and kicking at Sky Sports
Sky Sports presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys have provoked a storm following sexist comments they made during the Wolves v Liverpool game at the weekend when they made disparaging comments about a woman assistant referee. There’s a great piece taking Keys and Gray to task on the LadyArse blog.
Conference North map and stats
Ok, I know it’s tempting fate and we’re getting ahead of ourselves after a decent run of wins but the latest map on the Bill Sports Maps website is a guide to the Conference North league, where the teams are, their history and crowd stats etc. It’s well worth a look for an insight into the next level above where FC United plays. And, as you would expect, FC’s crowds compare very favourably. Check out the website at Bill Sport Maps.
United deny £1.5 billion take over offer from Qatar
A Qatari consortium is reported to have offered an eye-watering £1.5bn to buy Manchester United from the Glazers, after holding high-level secret talks. The Qataris are rumoured to have made the approach shortly after they secured the rights to host the 2022 World Cup. United have denied the approach but the story rumbles on. Hamburger SV fans elected to club board
Members of Hamburger SV in Germany have elected three members of the Supporters Club onto the football club’s advisory board. Around 3,000 members of Hamburger SV attended the annual members meeting to vote. Hamburger SV has one of the highest turnovers of any German club and this decision means that the fans have a key seat at the decision-making table. Read more at Supporters Direct .

The Football Supporters’ Federation publishes a regular magazine, The Football Supporter, and the most recent issue contains all sorts of interesting stuff including articles on fans’ protest in Austria and the rise of ’ultra’ culture amongst UK fans. Olympic stadium - the effect on Leyton Orient
Much of the news coverage surrounding the decision on the future of the 2012 Olympic stadium has centred on West Ham and Tottenham, who are both bidding to play at the facility in east London. However, whichever Premier League club moves into the stadium, the biggest effect could be felt by Leyton Orient FC, who fear that their very future could be threatened.
