A Scott for England against Wales

FC United Youth Team Player Scott Cheetham made his first appearance for the England Schools team in a Victory Shield game against Wales this week, playing a full 90 minutes in a 1-0 win at Huish Park, Yeovil.

He is expected to feature again when the side play a friendly against Poland at Walsall on Wednesday 13th as the manager has complete faith in him.

So how did he achieve this, the simple answer is hard work, with a little bit of luck thrown in for good measure. Scott joined FC United last season and also enrolled at MANCAT playing for the latter midweek.

Some of you may have noticed the MANCAT team won the Greater Manchester Schools Cup last season. One of the teams beaten en-route was Winstanley College. They are managed by the manager of the England Schools FA’s North West Region, who was impressed with Scott and a number of others who were invited for trials.

Scott approached this with the quiet determination he has shown in all the challenges he has faced. After taking part in a number of friendly games; including a trip to Spain where the side beat Malaga under-17s 2-0 he was given his chance against Wales.

He is delighted with the opportunities he has been given although, as he doesn’t say a lot, it would be hard to notice. His next goal is to secure a place in the FC United first team having made his debut at Burscough last season.

However, as a left sided midfielder he has some stiff competition but as an England regular there will be admiring glances from afar. Coaches have all admired a single minded determination when faced with a new challenge, Margy has been quoted as saying Scott has more natural ability than he did at the same age and we know where his career took him.

Youth team manager Chuks Akuneto notes the phenomenal improvement over the two years he has worked with Scott. The question should perhaps be can we afford not to pick him?

Well done Scott.
