Healthy Eating Match Trips and Good Neighbours

Healthy Eating Match Trips

FC United is continuing with its highly popular trips taking older people or people with long-term illnesses for a healthy lunch and to a match. This Saturday (15th October) a coach leaves Victoria Square at 12 noon, calling at Newton Heath Library and Joseph Dean Court to pick people up before stopping at the Moston Miner’s Cafe for a warming meal. Then on to the match!

Depending on what happens with the FA Cup, we are hoping to play Stocksbridge on the 29th October, in which case the match trip will also offer the chance for a trip to Holmfirth, home of the Last of the Summer Wine. We’ll be taking bookings from Monday 17th October.

If you would like to come, or know someone else in Miles Platting or Newton Heath who would like to come, please call Michael Holdsworth on 0161 273 8950 or email him at
michaelholdsworth@fc-utd.co.uk
The trips are free to residents who live in the area who are over 50 years old.

Good Neighbours Scheme

FC United’s Good Neighbours scheme is finally up and running! Volunteer Frank ’The Manc’ Dormer will be accompanying an older person to a coffee morning on Friday when her usual carer is away on holiday. The project in Miles Platting and Newton Heath is designed to help older people get the basic help and/or company some lack, and which you would expect to get from a good neighbour. This might include such activities as basic DIY, gardening, helping the person to get to the shops or the Post Office, fetching them books from the library, or taking them to a coffee morning. Each person will need a different type of help and we will aim to match the needs of the older person with the interests of the volunteer.

To help people prepare for volunteering we have organised some training (on working with older people, on basic first aid and on food hygiene) which will provide new knowledge and skills. This training will also provide certification (e.g. the Food Safety gains you an RSPH Level 2 Award), providing extra help to any volunteers who are applying for jobs.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, or if you know someone who would benefit from being a user of the service, please call Michael Holdsworth on 0161 273 8950 or email him at michaelholdsworth@fc-utd.co.uk
