FC United win five goal thriller at Worksop

FC United claimed three points away from home in the Midlands for the second week running with a 3-2 victory over Worksop Town courtesy of goals from Nicky Platt, Lee Neville and an own goal.

The Reds started brightly and saw much of the ball, Carlos Roca being played through only to see his cross cut out by impressive home keeper Jon Worsnop.

The Tigers had a chance of their own 10 minutes later when Lee Neville dwelt on the ball to allow Messiah McDonald in but his shot was miraculously saved by United goalkeeper James Spencer.

On 25 minutes FC took the lead as Dean Stott played a superb ball through to Astley Mullholland who crossed to Jake Cottrell. Cottrell shot and saw Worsnop push the ball onto the post where it came out to Nicky Platt who slid the ball into the net with help from defender Luke Shiels.

On the half hour, the lead was almost doubled when Cottrell embarked on a solo run that saw his cross cum shot cleared from the line.

Five minutes later, the goal did arrive when Mullholland latched onto a poor backpass. He worked the ball to Cottrell who saw his shot pushed wide by Worsnop. From the resultant corner, Lee Neville rose and headed in.

Mike Norton was next to try his luck when he headed a Roca free-kick against the bar and over and that proved to be the last action of good first half for the Reds.

The home team came out more determined in the second half with the dangerous Jamie Jackson running into the box, Spencer tipping over. Two minutes later, the lead was halved when Mark Hudson ran unopposed through the FC defence and rolled the ball past Spencer.

The Reds were struggling to get any moves going and it came as no surprise when Worksop equalised. The ball finding its way to McDonald at the corner of the box who fired clinically into the bottom corner.

Straight from the restart, the ball was played out to Mullholland who charged down the right wing and crossed into the box where Worsnop parried the ball out only to see the onrushing Shiels bundle it into his own net. The goal energised the away side, Deegan going through and checking back before shooting straight at the keeper.

On 83 minutes, Norton was unlucky as he beat the offside trap and lobbed the ball over Worsnop who scrambled back and superbly scooped the ball off the line. United should really have found a fourth to settle the nerves in the closing stages but in the end three goals were enough to take all the three points.

Website man of the match - Nicky Platt, a performance full of energy in the midfield and was at the centre of most of the good FC attacks.
