Youth beat Mossley in County Cup

Competitive football returned to St Brides as the Youth took on Mossley in the Manchester County FA U’18 cup. This was the first of a double header of cup ties, as next week sees a trip up to Mossley for their league’s Premier Division Cup. This game was a comfortable 4-0 win for the lads. First half goals were from Kial Callacher, Matthew Boland and Theo Kidd with a Sam Howell header completing the scoring after the break.

The first goal came in the fifth minute from a Jonathan Poizer corner. A deflection which the players said was from the Mossley keeper Curtis Hickman seemed to be heading goalwards. Kial applied a touch to make sure although there were claims that it was already over the line. Hickman certainly contributed to the second goal after twelve minutes. He took a free kick out on the right wing but could only find Matthew Boland. After taking a touch to control the ball he fired back into the empty net.

Mossley were unlucky not to pull a goal back midway through the half, hitting the post with a splendid strike. Otherwise the half belonged to FC with further chances falling to Kial and Connor Naughton, the latter producing a good save from Hickman. It was 3-0 on 39 minutes when Sam Howell played Theo Kidd in behind the defence. His shot going in off the far post and shortly afterwards Matthew drew a save from Hickman as he dived to turn a goal bound shot wide for a corner.

The second half was played at a more leisurely pace with the game seemingly won. The visitors only troubled Farrimond in the home goal once, saving a powerful drive in the 77th minute. A Matthew Boland free kick from 40 yards that flew just past the post was perhaps the highlight of the half. That was until the 86th minute when substitutes Asima Matabaro and Matthew Hassall combined down the right wing, for the latter to put a perfect cross in for Sam Howell to head home at the far post.

The game then wound down with no further incident of note; the reds seeing the twin targets of a win with a clean sheet achieved.
