The Youth Ship Sails Up The Alley Alley-o

The first week of October is rarely a week in which football’s league titles are decided, but on Sunday the Youth Team can take a huge step forward.

The day leaves the discerning FC fan spoilt for choice as all three teams have games; the youth travel to Warrington Town for a clash of the early season pace setters, with a 2:30pm kick off at Cantilever Park, Loushers Lane, WA4 2RS. Both sides are free scoring with frugal defences and have 100% records going into the game; so, something has to give.

FC United currently head the table by virtue of an extra game played but Warrington have outscored the reds by 20 to 14. Neither side has played for nearly a month so both are keen to get back into action.

Last season saw the reds open at Warrington with a 2-0 victory, but Sunday’s hosts came back late in the season with two comprehensive wins. At the league a tight first half saw the sides level in score but the reds a man short as Alex Stones was a little vehement in his expression of disappointment at a debateable refereeing decision. Warrington took full advantage of the spaces at right back to dominate the second half and win 6-1. Then there was the Neil Thomason Cup Final at Salford’s Moor Lane Ground. Warrington took the trophy with a 4-1 win that again owed much to defensive frailty.

Warrington are in their second season in the North West Youth Alliance, having started with a side that contained a large number of 16 year olds that grew together as last season progressed, and are benefitting from being to retain over a dozen of the squad for this year.

FC Youth Manager Dave Brown however believes that the squad he has assembled this year will do better than last year. Although Warrington will be keen to ensure that the reds 16 year olds don’t do it this season, Browny is confident he can help Warrington to the euphemistic “Difficult Second Season.???

Cantilever Park opens at 1:30 and refreshments will be available, as will a match programme priced at £1.00 for all you collectors. If the FA Cup is not for you get yourself down to the side of the Manchester Ship Canal and support the lads. Who knows, if the canal drainage problem has been dealt with you may even see a big ship sail up the alley alley-o.
