Unbeaten Bears could snare United

FC United look to put the disappointment of Saturday’s match abandonment behind them on Wednesday night by extending their run of consecutive victories to seven with the visit of ‘The Bears’ - Congleton Town, but it shouldn’t be a simple walk in the park. John Freeman provides this preview"¦

The south east Cheshire club have every right to come to Gigg Lane in confident mood after getting their season off to a great start with three victories, a draw and 13 goals scored.

The Bears, so nicknamed because of the town’s penchant for the sport of bear-baiting during Elizabethan times, are no strangers to the Reds having hosted us at their Booth Street ground in a friendly last April. They won 2-0 that night, but United will not let that affect them too much.

Congleton did in fact have a role to play in FC United’s inception, as it was club secretary Ken Mead who nominated FC United for inclusion into the NWFCL at the League AGM. Ken is pleased at the successful outcome. He said: "FC United have done everything properly @ they have judged the calibre of players required to progress and also managed to invest in other areas of the club."??

After a poor start and early exits from all major cup competitions in 2005/2006, current manager Paul Moore was appointed for the second half of the season and guided the team to mid-table respectability, finishing in 13th place.

After getting off to a good start, The Bears are looking to improve on last seasons efforts and Ken reckons Wednesday will provide a good benchmark for the year ahead, as well as a great occasion for the club.

He said: "Last season’s friendly gave us a sample of the atmosphere and everyone is looking forward to the match, not only to play in front of a big crowd, but to test our progress against one of the strong teams in the division."??

FC United expect to have a full squad to choose from other than David Swarbrick, who has been sidelined for around two months after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst.
