FC United aim to close the gap with game in hand against Whitby
FC United look to get back to winning ways against Whitby Town at Gigg Lane on Saturday afternoon after losing four of our last five fixtures and the Reds are aiming to close the gap on the leaders in the Evo-Stik Premier Division as we play a game in hand on all of the top four teams.
Karl Marginson’s side will have to take on The Seasiders without three players through suspension; midfielder Chris Worsley serves the final game of his three game ban for an innocuous sending off against Witton Albion, striker Michael Norton will serve his second match for being dismissed for his part in a fracas after the final whistle at Frickley, and centre-back Tom Davies’ suspension begins on Saturday for his lunging tackle that earned him a red card against Chorley in the FA Cup.
The better news is that forward Matthew Wolfenden is expected to be fit after limping out of last Saturday’s injury-time defeat at Stafford Rangers with a thigh strain and the Reds will be confident going into the match knowing they have not lost to Saturday’s visitors in our 10 meetings with them over the last five years. United’s record against Whitby is six wins and four draws.
If Wolfenden doesn’t recover, Margy knows he is able to call upon the vast experience of player-coach Rhodri Giggs but he may also be tempted to give a league debut to 18-year-old Dutchman Frank van Gils. The former Feyenoord and Manchester City trainee scored on his first team debut in the Manchester Premier Cup on Tuesday night in the 3-3 draw at New Mills.
Meanwhile, Cavell Coo has left with Margy’s best wishes to pursue first team football at Ashton United and centre-backs Adam Jones and Charlie Raglan are both just a few weeks away from being back playing matches after responding well to light training.
Margy said: "They have both been working really hard to get fit and they have had no adverse reactions to training so far, so touch wood, we’ll be able to get them match fit with a few games in the Development Team in a few weeks."
