Background to Posts and Commissions

Introduction

Work on FC United’s new ground is well underway and is planned to be completed at the end of the summer 2014. The Club, founded in 2005, is a trailblazer in English football in having its obligations to fans and local communities central to everything it does. The Club has won awards for its approach and for its cutting edge work with local communities.

FC United believes that the current accepted model for owning and running football clubs can be improved if clubs sought a greater level of engagement with fans and the local communities in which they are located. FC United seeks to change the way that football is owned and run, putting supporters first and at the heart of club objectives. It aims to show, by example, how this can work in practice by creating a sustainable, successful, fan-owned, democratic football club that creates real and lasting benefits to its members and local communities. The new ground and associated sports and community facilities being built in Moston, North Manchester, is a key element in aiding the club to deliver its ambitions.

It is the Club’s aim is that this development will have a lasting benefit as well as providing a sustainable future for the Club.

The Club is looking to employ some additional professional resources to help us deliver the project and maximise its impact.

Context

FC United is a co-op, formed as a Community Benefit Society, owned by over 3,000 members. The Club constitution requires the board and Club members to:

i. to strengthen the bonds between the Club and the community which it serves and to represent the interests of the community in the running of the Club;
ii. to benefit present and future members of the community served by the Club by promoting encouraging and furthering the game of football as a recreational facility, sporting activity and focus for community involvement;
iii. to ensure the Club to take proper account of the interests of its supporters and of the community it serves in its decisions;
iv. to further the development of the game of football nationally and internationally and the upholding of its rules;

The development of the ground, community sports pitches and multi-function and classroom spaces offers the best opportunity for the Club to achieve these ambitions.

The £6m development is supported by extensive fundraising by the Club’s members and supporters which includes a unique community share scheme, grant funding and other finance. It is also supported by a robust business plan and 5 year forecast which includes provision for a much expanded staff structure.

‘Now we are the builders’ project

The board of FC United have reviewed both the opportunity that this represents as well as the need for additional resources at this development stage.
