Treasury minister visits Broadhurst Park to see benefits of social investment at FC United

FC United today hosted a visit at Broadhurst Park from the government minister responsible for social investment. Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Damian Hinds MP, wanted to find out more about the impact social investment tax relief has had on the club and meet some of the funders and some of the people benefiting from the club to hear about their experiences.

FC United has been successful in developing community shares and through discussions with HMRC has pioneered the use of tax relief for community investment. With our recent success in raising funds from community shares and social investment tax relief (SITR) via loan stock, FC United has been spearheading the development of financial vehicles for football fans and the wider community to gain a greater say in the way community facilities are owned and operated. Talking to Government ministers and other politicians is an essential part of this process.

During the minister’s visit, club officials emphasised the need for the government to take positive steps to extend social investment and member ownership. In addition to highlighting the success of the club in raising funds and building a community facility in Moston, it was impressed upon the minister the benefits of community ownership and the need for the government to create a climate where local people could more easily be involved in financing and running community facilities.

It is helpful for government representatives to hear from organisations like FC United who have used social investment, so that they better understand both the benefits and the challenges involved.
