FC Walking Football Tournament a Resounding Success

The first Walking Football tournament to be staged at Broadhurst Park proved a resounding success, with an FC United team taking the honours after a nail-biting penalty shout out.

Ten teams of over-50’s battled it out on the 3G pitch, including three from FC (playing in red, white and blue, respectively), with the blue-shirts victorious from the spot against Fleetwood, after the game had ended without any scoring.

Goals in fact were hard to come by on what proved to be a very competitive but highly enjoyable day in front of a good appreciative crowd. FC’s Kevin Taylor was the only player from his team to find the back of the net from open play in the 1-0 win against Middleton. But despite only hitting the mini targets just once, the ‘FC blue’ side’s resolute defence impressively kept a clean sheet in all five of their games.

In the semi-final, FC’s blue-shirted team kept the FA-registered officials well and truly on their toes as they came through an epic 18-penalty shoot out.

Kevin, a Saddleworth-based FC co-owner for over 10 years, commented:

“I felt very proud indeed to represent FC and play at the great facility that we’ve created in Moston???, he said.

“The tournament certainly showed that there is no shortage of interest in walking football. It’s great for social inclusion and exercise. For many, it helps provide a completely new lease of life???.

In addition to Kevin Taylor, the tournament-winning FC team was Graham Kershaw, Peter Dixon (Captain), Brendan Foley, Neil Frame, John Hampson and Nick Dixon.
