More volunteers - and paint - needed for crucial ground worksWork is ongoing over the coming week to continue the construction of a new wall around the pitch perimeter at Broadhurst Park, and the club is still hoping volunteers can offer some time to assist.

The concrete block wall will provide a strong and lasting base for pitch side advertising hoardings, which have had to be replaced this summer after the battering they’ve taken over the past year from the weather, supporters and balls from the pitch.

Around 1,300 blocks in total need to be laid across some 167 linear metres, to help ensure the club can stage league fixtures next season - the league will not let us play football on the pitch without the hoardings in place.

While good progress has been made by a team of volunteers over the past week, there are still plenty of blocks to be laid and plenty of labouring work to be done, to keep the process moving efficiently.

Four different bricklayers are volunteering significant time to the work, and the club needs further volunteers to support the bricklaying with the mixing and barrowing of mortar, drilling of ties to steel columns, cutting blocks etc.

Volunteers will need to bring along steel-capped safety boots.

Work is ongoing all this week and Saturday, between 8.30am and 8.30pm so the club is looking for people who can volunteer for a few hours at a time.

If you can help, please email your details to petershaw@fc-utd.co.uk.

Please spread the word if you know anyone who could fit the bill.

In addition the club is appealing for donations of white, red or black masonry paint, and/or ideally grey, green or red floor paint.

The paint is needed for some decoration jobs, including the new pitch perimeter wall, and the Main Stand gents toilets.

Any donations of unwanted paint (can be part-used) can be left at the club’s reception during nor-mal office hours - thanks in advance.

In the meantime, and despite the close season, the ground has been a hive of activity with various other works taking place to prepare for next season. Works include:
  • Re-painting of the noses to all the steps in the Main and East Stands;
  • Jet washing of all the terraces and Main Stand;
  • Painting the block walls in the women’s toilets under the Main Stand to make them brighter;
  • Works to the cabins to prevent anti social behaviour and nuisance to our immediate neighbours;
  • Ongoing ground improvements and maintenance by the Diggers;
  • Re-alignment of the disabled seats in the Main Stand to remove congestion issues and improve comfort for disabled supporters and carers;
  • Installation of a bespoke weathervane, specially made and donated supporter John Reed, his daughter Jen and son-in-law Phiz who run the locally-based Black Fox Metalcraft.

    On the pitch, the ground staff have been doing work to further improve the drainage - with the aim of repeating last season’s feat of not having any games called off, while Robert Hope colleagues at Expert Home Extensions gave up considerable amounts of their own time earlier in the year to install the inscribed bricks.

    As ever, the club would like to express its thanks and appreciation to all those staff and volunteers who have been working so hard to keep Broadhurst Park in fine condition as we prepare for or second season in our own ground.
