FC United return to action at Broadhurst Park this Saturday looking to bounce back from the midweek loss at Salford City against Worcester City.

Having drew their first two games and then beating Stockport at home last weekend the Reds were in high spirits as they went to the much fancied Salford on Tuesday evening and Margy would have felt his team could have possibly come away from Moor Lane with something having had a couple of great opportunities to level the score in the second half.

Undoubtedly the Reds will be looking to get back into the swing of things and will be looking to continue the strong start at Broadhurst Park having drew and won the first two home games of the season and not conceding a goal in doing so.

The two teams hadn’t met before last season and United struggled in the two meetings, losing at home and drawing away without registering a goal. The home game in October the Reds were beaten 2-0 as experienced forward Lee Hughes netted in the first half before seeing Red later in the game. The second meeting was a close affair with neither side being able to break the deadlock and the pints being shared after a 0-0 draw.

City finished last season in 17th place with 48 points which was four places below our final position and five points. After a 2-2 draw at home to Harrogate Town on the opening day City have since struggled, losing to Tamworth (1-0) and FC Halifax Town (3-0).

On Tuesday they took on Gloucester City at home going down 3-2 despite scoring two late goals to give themselves a fighting chance of at least claiming an unlikely point.

The poor start to the season sees City currently second from bottom in the early league table with only Gainsborough below them by virtue of goal difference. One positive has been the form of veteran striker Lee Hughes who has scored three of City’s four league goals so far.

Originally formed in 1902, Worcester City took over local side Berwick Rangers fixture list in the Birmingham & District League following the liquidation of the latter.

In the 1958-59 season the club reached the fourth round proper of the FA Cup after beating Liverpool in the third round, but lost the fourth round tie at home to Sheffield United in front of a record crowd of 17,042.

But their cup pedigree doesn’t stop there, you may remember in 2014 they beat Coventry City 2-1 in the first round of the FA Cup before going out after a second round replay against Scunthorpe United.

City had played at their home ground of St. George’s Lane until they left in June 2013 after the site was sold to a housing developer but the sale didn’t generate the funds needed to pay for a new stadium and the club had to ground share with Kidderminster Harriers at their Aggborough gorund.

From the start of this season City have once again moved grounds and are currently ground sharing with Bromsgrove at their Victoria Ground whilst plans for a new ground are currently pending with the City of Worcester Council.

Saturday’s fixture is the usual pay on the gate and the even more usual 3.00pm kick off with the match information listed below.

So get yourself down to that football ground and cheer the Reds on.
