Step Four Restructure Decision Expected Today

The FA Leagues Committee meets today to discuss the final plans for the restructuring of the non-league pyramid at Step Four, which includes the Unibond League.

Speculation about the shape of the next step up North West Counties Division One has been in the air for some time and today’s meeting is expected to finally announce how next season’s league structure will be constituted.

The most likely formulation is for three teams to be promoted from the NWCFL though some commentators have suggested that as many as four teams could be promoted, it is expected that NWCFL may resist the loss of so many of its top sides.

Whatever happens at the FA today a final decision needs to be made soon to allow clubs to plan for next season. Consett have already withdrawn their application to join Step Four due to the current uncertainty and others may follow suit, leaving the FA’s plans in jeopardy.

With Curzon and Salford drawing nil, nil last night the implications for FC United are that we could effectively be promoted this weekend. Victory at Nelson on Wednesday night followed by a win at Ramsbottom would see FC clinch out right promotion against Maine Road on Monday regardless of results elsewhere.

Manager Karl Maginson wants everyone to get behind the team on Monday afternoon:

‘Everyone at the club is targeting top spot as this is the only place that will guarantee promotion at this stage and that means winning every game,’ said Margy. ‘The match against Maine Road now looks like it will be a promotion decider and we need all the support we can get on Monday to give the lads that final push.’
